Social Learning Activities
Supplement Self-Paced Training with social learning activities (the gray boxes on the Week One schedule below):
- Self-paced training (SPT) content is paired with social learning opportunities like Zoom Syncs (meetings to debrief and retrieve the self-paced training content)
- Virtual Jeopardy: fun content review (engaging spaced retrieval)
- Live Instructor-led sessions with the small group to generate learner engagement—as the group is all-remote, these live ILTs were added to balance the need for social contact with facilitators (acting as new hire coaches for the onboarding week).
Coaching
In Coaching, social learning is able to drive the development of expertise and equip novices to make a contribution as they move toward expertise. This program begins at the end of onboarding with goal-setting and continues throughout product and role training. Here are three documents created to introduce and support the coaching program:
New Hire Coach One Sheet: A quick explainer document to share with potential coaches and team leads

Social Learning to Grow Self-Determination
Metacognition—thinking about thinking—is critical for learning. In the same way, learning about learning provides opportunities to help team members drive their own professional development. Social learning supports (a) self-paced training and (b) authentic learning activities to synergistically grow self-determination. This PowerPoint puts the tools for growing expertise (and Self-Determination) into the hands of learners.
